Silver Boom Financed Fantastic Hotels

Locate Glenwood Springs Lodging

Glenwood Springs, Colorado is a major attraction for outdoor buffs worldwide. Two beautiful, chilly rivers meet here, bringing Gold Medal trout fishing and roraring whitewater for rafters and kayakers. Six world-class ski resorts are less than an hour away. Moreover, those mountains are overflowing with serene panoramas and wildlife. Hunters and hikers alike flood the trails and backcountry. Glenwood Springs is not just an outdoor haven, however. The surrounding land was a silver boom hotbed in the 1800s, and a few of the luxurious, spacious hotels that popped up are still around in all of their glory today.

In 1893, banker and mining baron Walter Devereux opened Hotel Colorado, a rambling post-renaissance design replete with cornices and corbels, Palladian arches and twin bell towers. The grounds incorporated a spring fed pool, a cascading fountain, an indoor waterfall and lavish dining and lodging.

The decadence of the resort and the wonders of its hot springs attracted superstars and the social and political privileged. Teddy Roosevelt amd William Taft made extended stops at Hotel Colorado, and Herbert Hoover picked the location for a key speech on commerce and finance.

Infamous gangster Diamond Jack Alterie pranced his massive ego around the resort. The famous gambler Doc Holliday spent his final months attempting to defeat tuberculosis in the area’s hot springs.
During World War II, Hotel Colorado saw duty and operated as a recovery hospital for nearly 7,000 soldiers.

Today, Hotel Colorado is a totally up to date resort with wi-fi internet, a luxurious spa, and seasonal gear and equipment outfitters, all the while maintaining its historical authenticity and architecture. There have even been scattered reports of ghosts.

At the start of last century the riverfront district of Glenwood Springs was abounding with bars, gambling houses and brothels. When Prohibition virtually shut down many of those businesses, a few local businessmen were able to consolidate saloons and inns cheap. The Hotel Denver was born in 1938 as the result of the merging and expansions. The riverfront neighborhood is now a clean, hot destination in the town, with cozy eateries, and the Hotel Denver has become an affordably elegant stay over right in the heart of downtown. The Hotel Denver also displays the contemporary amidst the hotel’s historic brick and mortar.

Ten miles south is the Sunlight Mountain Inn. While it is not so much an historical stop, it is a great stop for groups who may want to tour the historical areas and then get in a day of skiing. The bed and breakfast is cozy with large fireplaces in the rooms, scenes of the Mt. Sopris and the rivers and great skiing just next door at Sunlight Mountain Resort.
