Bucerias Beachfront

It is difficult not to love Mexico. Tasty food, beautiful beaches, alluring customs and warmhearted people comprise the culture in this singularly unique country. The one shortcoming may be the throngs of people in the large resort cities. However, just a short drive from the resort center of Puerto Vallarta is the town of Bucerias – an old fishing town that these days could be considered Puerto Vallarta light.

Like any large resort town, Puerto Vallarta has many nightclubs and theme bars to keep the nights wild. The beaches are regularly overpopulated by tourists, and hometown restaurants supply American and European preferences rather than the authentic Mexican fare. However, not everyone enjoys the clamor of the big city, and teeming throngs can often spoil what otherwise should be a great time. Just a few miles north though, is Bucerias – which has everything PV has to offer but at a slower pace and with a friendlier attitude.

Bucerias, like most Mexican Pacific coastal towns, was a fishing town at its beginning in the early twentieth century. The term Bucerias is “divers” in Spanish; indicating the town’s founding when many of the founders ferreted out a living diving the shallows of Banderas Bay for oysters. Bucerias is famous for its oysters and almost all of the little street and sidewalk vendors offer fresh seafood meals. Fishing is still a huge part of the local economy as there are many guided fishing operations doing business in town. Huge sailfish and marlin are regularly caught in the bay.

Bucerias is still adorned with cobblestone roads and street markets of traditional Mexican villages. However, this town of over 15,000 people mixes entirely up-to-date comforts with ancient customs and the traditionally casual Mexican outlook. Bucerias has a swanky, all-inclusive major resort that compares to any in Puerto Vallarta, and the theaters and playhouses in Buceria put on plays of the same quality as PV theaters . Clubs in Bucerias are as exciting as ones in the big cities, but they come with a more casual atmosphere and far smaller groups to contend with.

Aside from the posh resorts and classy restaurants, Bucerias has a sophisticated side that is somewhat hiddenrelatively buried. Artists seem to flock to Bucerias and the community hosts a large weekly art festival. Several galleries tout their wares at the market – which supports nascent Mexican artists who may not otherwise have the opportunity.
